Box @ Richmond: Plug-ins and Apps

Box Edit is an add-on feature that allows you to edit or create files directly on Box. Designed for all file types, browsers, and platforms, Box Edit uses the native application installed on your computer to edit or create files (i.e, .docx files open in Microsoft Word, .pptx files open in Microsoft PowerPoint, .xlsx files open in Excel, etc.).  An overview and FAQ on Box Edit can be found on the box.com web site.


Box for Office desktop app lets you easily open, edit, save and share any file from Box seamlessly within Word, PowerPoint and Excel - as well as streamline your workflow within Outlook by using shared links to files in Box instead of attachments.  This app is only available for Windows.

Box for Office iOS allows Box users to edit their Office files with Office mobile clients on the go. Now users can edit their Box files anywhere starting from either Box or Office!


Box Capture is an app that can be used to instantly take a picture, video, or document scan and upload it right in to Box. This app is only available for iOS devices and can be downloaded from the App Store


Box Notes is a desktop app for Macs and PCs that lets you take notes, share ideas, and collaborate in real-time. Mac OS 10.11 or higher or Windows 7 or higher is required to install Box Notes.

The box app will be reviewed by our Box App Vetting Group. Once the app is reviewed, you will be contacted regarding your request.

Box Sync is a feature that allows you to automatically sync files and folders between your Box account and your desktop.  Box Sync helps you keep your files organized, safe, and always in sync. Any changes made on the desktop will be automatically sync’d to a user’s Box account.  Box Sync supports both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Box Sync does not sync by default, the user must select which folders in their Box account that they wish to sync with their computer.  Navigate to any folder in your Box account, click the drop-down arrow to the right of the folder name, and then click “Sync Folder to Computer”.  The folder and all of its contents will be sync’d to the Box Sync application on your computer.

Files/folders can also be dragged from any folder on your computer into the Box Sync application.  These will automatically be sync’d to the “Default Sync Folder” in your Box account, unless you drag them to a specific folder.

Best results will occur if these recommendations are followed.  Box Sync is a useful tool; however those who use only Box Sync will be missing out on the powerful collaborative features in their Box accounts.

It is best to use Box Sync when:

  • You need to work offline or don't have internet access
  • You need to work frequently on a very large file
  • You need to upload individual files from your desktop to your Box account (the Box Upload feature provides better performance for bulk file uploads)

Do not use Box Sync:

  • To keep a copy of the entire contents of your Box account on your desktop
  • To sync files to multiple computers
  • To sync very large numbers of files; Box recommends 10,000 or fewer files
  • To re-organize your folder structure.  Do this from within your Box account.
  • To sync folders to an external or network drive; Box Sync is most reliable when used on the local hard drive
