E-Mail "Phishing" Attempts

This is an important message from Information Services regarding the recent rash of "phishing" emails that many in the community have received.  These emails are designed to entice people into revealing their account passwords or other secure access information.

The most recent attempt at "phishing" on campus has been in the form of an email that indicates it is being sent from Joseph Suresh.  The message states: "Your mailbox has exceeded the storage limit which is 20GB as set by your administrator, you are currently running on 20.9GB,you may not be able to send or receive new mail until you re-validate your mailbox. To re-validate your mailbox  please CLICK HERE"

This message is of course NOT from the UR Help Desk, and the "reply" to that message does not come to the UR Help Desk.

Under no circumstances will Information Services at the University of Richmond request that you send your password to the Help Desk via email.  The same is true for any other organization on campus that may deal with secure data.

As a general rule, NEVER provide your password to any account as part of a reply to an email message.  These phishing attempts are a form of spam and should simply be deleted.

You may always relay your security questions or concerns to security@richmond.edu
