Clearpass Computer Registration: Frequently Asked Questions

What is ClearPass?

ClearPass is the University of Richmond's computer registration system. The purpose of the system is to ensure that all computers connected to the University network meet the minimum security requirements before being granted access.

Why do I need ClearPass?

The ClearPass client is used to keep our University network secure by making sure that personal and university owned Windows and Mac computers have their firewalls active, antivirus installed and running, and the system updates turned on. Windows users are required to download Sophos antivirus. Mac users have two options for antivirus, Sophos or Endpoint Protection, depending on the amount of memory on your computer. We recommend Mac users withmore than 4 GB of RAM to install Sophos, otherwise for users with 4GB or less to install Endpoint Protection. All computers that are connected to the network will be required to have the ClearPass software agent installed on the machine before it will be allowed access to the network. Phones, tablets, gaming consoles, and other similar devices do not require an agent at this time.

How will this affect me?

All Students: You will need to install the ClearPass software agent. ClearPass will monitor the health of your machine to make sure that the operating system is up-to-date and has all of it's patches. It will also make sure that the computer's firewall is turned on and that the University required antivirus is installed on the computer. Note: If you have a corporate laptop, you must bring the laptop in to the UR Help Desk.

Faculty and Staff: Faculty and Staff with a University owned computer, will have the agent pre-installed on their computers. Faculty and Staff who are using their own personal computers on campus will be required to install ClearPass. 

 

Do I need to install ClearPass on my phone/tablet/game console/smart TV?

Phones, tablets, gaming consoles, and other similar devices do not require ClearPass. 

When you connect your phone or table to the "urwin" wireless network, your device will be automatically registered on our Network. 

Game Consoles and Smart TVs will need to be pre-registered before they can connect the network. You can register the device using the Device Registration Form. Once your device is registered, you will receive an email from the Help Desk. Game Consoles and Smart TVs will only connect to the Richmond wireless network. 

How do I install the ClearPass software agent?

How will this affect me if I am off-campus?

Clearpass is only for the campus network. When you take your computer off campus, Clearpass may show an error message or a message similiar to "No Auth servers are available". ClearPass will not affect your ability to connect to other networks when you are off campus.

Troubleshooting:

Follow these steps if you are having trouble connecting to the network: 

  • Make sure that you are connected to the urwin network.
  • Make sure that you have the ClearPass software agent installed on your computer. 
  • Make sure that University required antivirus is installed on your machine and no other type of antivirus is also installed. 
  • Restart the ClearPass agent.
  • Restart your computer.
