Snow Leopard
As many of you are aware Apple has released their new operating system (OS) called Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard offers enhancements for the Mac platform which include Exchange Support, built in Anti Virus and improved 64 bit support. As is typical with a new operating system release many vendors follow with changes to their supported version numbers. For example, the introduction of Snow Leopard prompted Sophos to release a new update for Mac systems. In addition to evaluating the new Sophos release, User Services is currently testing Snow Leopard with other existing applications, and evaluating the underlying network and security configuration settings. Our goal is to thoroughly test the new OS before making it available as an upgrade for our Mac user community. We will communicate to the Mac Users list, and the community at large, when we are able to support Snow Leopard as the new standard for Macs on campus.
In the meantime, we are preparing to support Snow Leopard on home machines, and for the student population. Apple typically begins shipping systems with the new OS within a few weeks of the release date. Because of this, there will likely be some new machines with Snow Leopard in circulation within the next month or two. We plan to complete our testing and address this change with the University’s Software Standards Committee as soon as possible. User Services will assign a project team to manage the rollout of the new OS once the support questions have been addressed.
