How to set a default program?

Defaults programs can be changed when you want to set a different program to open by default when opening certain file types. 

  1. Click on the Start Button (Windows Logo) at the bottom left. 
  2. Select Settings.

Set Default Web Browser

  • To change the default web browser, click on "Web Browser".

  • Select your preferred browser.

Set Default PDF Program

  • To select a default program by App, such as for PDF programs, click on "Set Defaults by App".

  • Select your preferred program from the list of programs. Click on "Set this program as default".

These instructions can be followed to set other programs to be the Default for specific file types. 

How do I wake the computer Sleep?

When the computer goes to sleep, tap the space bar to wake. Some computers may require that you tap the power button and then the spacebar. 

How do I adjust the power settings for how often my computer goes to sleep?
  1. Click on the Start Button (Windows Logo) at the bottom left. 
  2. Select Settings.

  4. Click on Power & Sleep. The sleep settings can be adjusted here. For laptop, when running only on Battery, we recommend adjusting the sleep time to sleep after 1 hour.

How do I remove Cortana from the task bar?

Windows 10 uses Cortana as the search engine. To remove Cortana from the tool bar, Right click on the toolbar, select Cortana, select Hidden.

Why do I not have Cortana installed on my Windows 10 computer?
All University of Richmond PCs that have Windows 10 are installed with the Windows 10 Education version of Windows. The Education version does not include Cortana. 
How do I shut down or log out of my computer?

There are multiple ways to shut down or log out of your computer. Two of those ways are shown below:

  • To shut down or log off of your computer, click on the Start Button (Windows logo) and select Power.

  • Right click on the Start Button (Windows logo), select "Shut down or sign out" and then select the option that is needed.

How do I create different types of shortcuts?

In Windows 10, you can create different types of shortcuts, including Start Tiles, Desktop shortcuts, or shortcuts on the task bar. 

  • Pin to Start menu (Create Tiles): Locate the program that you want to Pin to the Start menu, right click the program and select "Pin to Start".
  • Pin to Task bar: Locate the program that you want to pin to the task bar, right click the program and select "Pin to Task bar"
  • Desktop Shortcuts: Locate the program that you want to create a shortcut on the desktop. Right click the program and select "More". Select "Open File Location". When the file location opens, right click the program shortcut, select "Send To" and choose "Desktop (create shortcut)".

How can I move icons on the Desktop and have them stay where I place them?

To move icons where you want on the Desktop and have them stay where you move them, you will need to change Auto arrange icons on the desktop.

  • Right click a blank area on the Desktop
  • Select "View"
  • Uncheck "Auto Arrange Icons"
How can I increase the size of items on the screen?
  • Go to the Start (Windows Button)
  • Select Settings
  • Select System
  • Slide the bar for "Change the size of text, apps, and other items" to the size you desire.

How can I set the Num Lock to be turned on by default when I turn on my computer?

If you want to set the Num Lock to be turned on when you first turn on the computer, follow these steps:

  1. At the logon screen, BEFORE logging in, turn on the Num Lock. 
  2. Locate the Power button at the bottom right corner of the Login Screen. Click on the Power button and select Restart.

  3. The next time Windows starts, Num Lock will be automatically enabled.

My Default Printer keeps changing by itself. How can I stop that from happening?

Windows 10 has a default setting that will automatically change your default printer based on the last printer that you printed to. To prevent this from happening, follow the steps below: 

  1. Click on your Start button. 
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Devices.
  4. Make sure "Printers & Scanners" is selected from the menu on the left hand side. 
  5. At the bottom of this window, turn off the setting for "Let Windows Manage my default printer". 

Once you have this setting turned off, your default printer will no longer change automatically. 

Where do I find the Control Panel?

You can easily find the Control Panel by right-clicking on the Start Button, and selecting "Control Panel" from the list of options that appears.
