Residential Telephone Service
Students living in on-campus housing have access to local telephone service from their rooms. The cost for local service is included in the room charge. Long distance service is available at an additional cost. Charges will be billed monthly on the student telecom bill.
Telephone
Students must provide their own telephones. Do not bring cordless phones. They can cause service disruptions such as interference with a neighbor's phone. Landline phones are available for purchase at Telecom in Jepson Hall, room G2.
Plug your telephone cord into the jack with the blue telephone icon beside it. If the telephone does not work, try it in a neighbor's jack to determine if there is a service issue with your phone or the telephone jack.
Phone number
Room telephone numbers are on the selection form filled out at room selection or mailed to new or transfer students in July. Share your telephone number with friends and family so they can reach you once you are on campus. All residential student numbers begin with the area code and suffix (804) 662-XXXX. You will also find your room phone number on the phone jack.
Voice Mail
Every student is provided with an individual voice mailbox. Find out how to set up your mailbox and retrieve messages.
Dialing
To call another number on campus, dial the last four digits.
Press 9 before dialing off campus.
Call Waiting
Press the switch hook once (i.e., flash button) to answer call waiting. Press it once again to return to the previous call.
For assistance with residence hall phones, review the frequently asked questions, or contact Telecom.
