Duo Security: Two-Factor Authentication

To protect against phishing and other exploits of stolen passwords, Information Services is implementing Duo Security two-factor authentication for faculty, staff, and student use of our campus VPN.  Currently, individuals use only their NetID and password to connect to the VPN. Two-factor authentication (2FA) strengthens security by requiring two factors to verify your identity, such as something you know (NetID/password) plus something you have (mobile device/app).

The Duo app on your Android or Apple smart phone or tablet will prompt you to accept authentication after entering your NetID and password to connect to the VPN.  This prevents unauthorized access even if your password has been compromised by an email phishing attack, because the remote perpetrator will not have access to your physical device. If you believe your password has been compromised, it is still important to reset it promptly or contact the University Helpdesk.
