Network & Internet

The University of Richmond's network provides secure access to the Internet and administrative systems. Students, faculty, and staff can connect to the network while on campus or off campus. All buildings on the University's campus and many outdoor areas have fast, reliable wireless network services. The wireless network blankets the campus with coverage and facilitates traditional and informal learning opportunities unconstrained by place and formal structure.

While on campus, students, staff, and faculty can access the University network through the campus-wide wireless network (urwin), or via one of the Ethernet jacks across campus. All users who wish to access the network must have an active University network account (NetID and password). University Managed computers and Student computers are required to have Crowdstrike Falcon Endpoint Protection and ClearPass installed to connect to 'urwin'.

Student Requirements

To be able to connect to the 'urwin' wireless network, students must install Crowdstrike Falcon Endpoint Protection and ClearPass.

Windows

Mac OS X

  1. Install Crowdstrike Falcon Endpoint Protection
  2. Install ClearPass
  3. Configure Wireless
  1. Install Crowdstrike Falcon Endpoint Protection and ClearPass

Smart Devices and Game Consoles

Faculty, Staff, and Students need to submit a Smart Device and Game Console registration through SpiderTechNet if they have a smart device (smart TVs, game consoles, e-readers, etc) that they would like to get network access.  Smartphones and tablets can automatically connect to the urwin wireless network.

Linux and Chromebooks

Linux and Chromebook computers are supported on the campus network. However, ClearPass isn't supported for Linux or Chromebooks. Once a Linux computer or Chromebook is connected to the network, you must contact the Help Desk to get the computer manually registered on the network.

VisitUR and Eduroam Networks

Visitors to the University who wish to access the network can connect to our public wireless network: VisitUR.

The Eduroam network allows visiting faculty, staff, and students from any institution that participates in Eduroam to logon to the ‘eduroam’ wireless network at the University of Richmond.

VPN Connections

The University of Richmond's network resources can be accessed by authenticated students, faculty, and staff using the University's Virtual Private Network (VPN) via an Internet connection.

Wireless Printing

While the University Network does not support personal wireless printers, there are public printers available on campus for faculty, staff, and students to print to.  For students who wish to print to a University printer, please read the University's printing policy. Students that have purchased wireless printers to use in their apartments/dorms, will need to use a printer cable to connect to the printer.
